BBC Links

This article made me laugh out loud at work today - not good when I am a consultant, supposed to be all professional.

My favourite quote is “One of the guys took off… straight through a glass window, he didn’t even bother pushing the button, he just ran straight through it.” Yeah right. And he didn’t have any help going through that door. Of course not!

Another article on the BBC caught my eye - this one about depression. It really struck a lot of cords with me.

One of my friends is suffering from depression at the moment - a lot of moods swings, but more and more downward swings. He has finally sought some help, so hopefully he is on the mend. I know that I am definitely more calm now than I used to be, and more tolerant, and definitely more content with life - I guess more accepting of what I can and can’t change. I have put that down to the experience that comes with age, but this article makes sense in that it may be down to my own bout of depression 6 years ago.

I like to think it’s helped my friend - I know when he is down, explaining how he feels, I am able to say I know exactly how he feels. I have examples of me going through the same experience - down to not answering the phone because you can’t deal with who you know is on the other end - which hopefully can show him that no matter what he feels, he isn’t alone in what he is feeling. And nore should he feel ashamed.

I was astounded at the statistics quoted though - typically 1 in 20 people are suffering from depression. That is a lot of people - and nearly all of it is hidden.
